A flourishing life is not merely about feeling good or achieving personal success. It is about using our strengths, experience and opportunities in ways that give our life meaning and contribute to something larger than ourselves.
Achievements may satisfy our desires, but they rarely answer the deeper question: What gives my life meaning?
Discovering your purpose and aligning your actions with it can bring a profound sense of fulfilment and direction.
How do we find our purpose?
First reflect on what is not your purpose.
— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
By eliminating what does not truly resonate, we begin to see what genuinely matters.
Purpose is often found at the intersection of our strengths, talents, values, and the needs of the world. Each of us is born with unique gifts that can become a meaningful contribution. Purpose does not have to be grand or world-changing. It may be raising a family with love, creating meaningful work, helping others grow, serving society, sharing knowledge, or simply making the lives around us a little better.
Ikigai: What Makes Life Worth Living?
The Japanese philosophy of Ikigai offers another beautiful way of looking at purpose. At its heart is the question: What makes my life worth living?
It encourages us to discover what gives us joy and meaning, what we are naturally drawn towards, what we can develop our abilities in, and how our strengths can contribute to something beyond ourselves.
Our purpose often emerges where what we love, what we are good at, what is meaningful to others, and how we can contribute begin to come together.
Ultimately, purpose is not necessarily something we suddenly find. It is something we gradually discover, shape and live through our experiences, choices, and contributions.
Role Models
- 1
The surgeon
An orthopedic surgeon discovered his purpose: to help at least one lakh people preserve their natural knees through education on nutrition, exercise, and weight management.
- 2
The health educator
Another health educator dedicated his life to improving the lifestyle of five lakh people by spreading awareness of healthy habits.
- 3
The village teacher
A village teacher spent her entire career educating generations of children. When asked whether she considered herself successful, she smiled and replied: “I may not have fame, but I helped hundreds find their light.”
These examples remind us that purpose is measured less by recognition and more by the lives we touch.
Why purpose matters
Research consistently shows that people with a stronger sense of purpose tend to enjoy better health and greater well-being. A 2026 meta-analysis involving nearly 489,000 people found a substantial association between a greater sense of purpose and a lower risk of premature death. While this shows an association rather than proof of causation, the evidence strongly suggests that living with purpose benefits both mind and body.
Living your purpose
Discovering your purpose is only the beginning. The real transformation happens when you live it consistently.
- 1
Start small
Every meaningful journey begins with a single step.
- 2
Act daily
Act on your purpose every day, even in modest ways.
- 3
Celebrate
Celebrate small milestones; celebration multiplies energy and sustains motivation.
Find your purpose—and then let your life become its expression.
